“OFFICINA” –concept of the ISAGA Summer School
When we thought to establish an ISAGA Summerschool suddenly the metaphor of the renaissance “officina” came to our mind. Officina was a place where masters and students could exchange experience, share knowledge and embark on their own voyage of discovery. It was a place where apprentices were the active element of the evolution of their knowledge; a place where it was possible to find co-teaching and co-learning at the same time. It was such a place like officina which brought about innovation and diffusion of knowledge. Our aim is to bring together “masters” from different areas of GS, as well as students and professionals who want to use GS in a place where each master could transmit visions of the theoretical founds of GS to the learners, and guide students through the learning experience. Thanks to the active participation of teachers and students from more of 25 nations, the ISAGA Summer Schools 2004 inMunich(Germany), 2005 in Krakow (Poland), 2006 in Dornbirn (Austria), 2007 inVenice(Italy) and 2008 in New Delhi(India) were a great success.
The summer school 2009 will give participants the opportunity to learn about the use of different gaming simulation methods and to learn how to design and facilitate gaming simulation for education and training. The minimum number of participants in the summer school is 20. The maximum number of participants is 40. Participants will form 5-6 mixed teams. The minimum number of participants in a project team of a teacher is 3. The maximum number of participants in a project team of a teacher is 7.
Morning sessions: lectures and discussions lead by teachers about their perspectives on gaming simulation design, demonstration / play of simulation games that were designed by the teachers and sharing of their experience about the design and facilitation process.
Afternoon and evening sessions: participants will form small project teams. Coached by teachers, they will design, test and discuss their own prototype simulation games. The results (prototype games including concept of debriefing structure) of the summer school will be presented in the whole group of participants. The copyright of the designed prototype games will belong to the students and teachers of the summer school and ISAGA. Summerschool language is english. Participants receive a certificate of participation from ISAGA.
